Cleaning Your POS Touchscreen: Do’s and Don’ts

The touchscreen at your counter is touched hundreds of times a day, often by hands that have just handled food, cash, products or salon treatments. Over time it gets greasy, sticky and less responsive. Staff start pressing harder, tapping twice and making mistakes. A clean screen is a faster checkout.

Cleaning it the wrong way, though, can damage the screen permanently. Here is how to do it safely.

Always check the manufacturer’s guidance

Different screens have different coatings. Before anything else, check what the manufacturer of your device recommends for cleaning. The tips below are general good practice and should not replace the specific instructions for your equipment.

Do’s

• Turn the screen off or lock it first. You will see the dirt more clearly and avoid pressing buttons by accident.
• Use a soft microfiber cloth. It lifts grease without scratching.
• Apply cleaner to the cloth, not the screen. A lightly dampened cloth is enough.
• Wipe gently in one direction, then dry with a clean part of the cloth.
• Clean the edges carefully, where dirt collects, without letting liquid run into gaps.
• Keep a dedicated cloth at each counter, washed regularly.

Don’ts

• Do not spray liquid directly on the screen. It can seep into the edges and damage the device.
• Do not use paper towels or rough cloths, which can scratch the surface over time.
• Do not use strong household cleaners unless the manufacturer allows them.
• Do not press hard or scrub. Grease comes off with patience, not force.
• Do not clean while a sale is open, so nothing gets tapped by mistake.

Special care for salons and food counters

Salons deal with oils, creams and hair products. Food counters deal with grease and sugar. Both need more frequent cleaning. Encourage staff to clean their hands before using the screen during busy periods, and keep the counter layout so products are not set down on or next to the device.

Build it into the shift routine

The easiest way to keep screens clean is to make it part of opening or closing. Add it to the same routine as counting the opening cash or checking the end-of-day report. It takes a minute and prevents the slow build-up that makes screens sluggish.

When cleaning does not help
